Mission
Calzado 5k is a yearly event co-directed with Natural Doctors International, a natural medicine nonprofit on the island. Our vision with Calzado 5k is to promote running, fitness, healthy eating and awareness of the island as an endangered environment that must be cared for. We collect gently used and returned running shoes for all of the children participants of the event. Our shoes are mainly donated from runners participating in the Fuego y Agua events as well as running stores and other organizations affiliated with our participants.
Past Participation
- Calzado 2008: 100 children, 110 pairs of shoes donated
- Calzado 2009: 350 children, 300 pairs of shoes donated
What you can do
The Calzado 5k takes a lot of work and dedication to coordinate and direct. Our costs include shipping shoes to Nicaragua, transport to the start line for the island children, food and water for aid stations and award ceremony, awards for 1st-3rd place finishers and much more. Transporting shoes to Nicaragua has been our biggest issue up to now,let us know if you have any ideas. If you would like to donate shoes or contribute in other ways toward this event, we would love to hear from you!
Making a race happen takes a lot of work and dedication and we can always use volunteers. See our volunteer page for more information or to register as a volunteer for these events.
