About Volunteering

Volunteering for Fuego y Agua involves a combination of hard work and adventure. We have two categories for volunteers, full time volunteers and runner-volunteers (Full time volunteers are those not running any of the events). Tasks include food preparation, packet-pickup, course marking, aid stations, motorcycle course control, hiking course control, volcano aid stations and more.

Fuego y Agua Volunteering Details and Itinerary

*times are estimates only
Full time volunteers MUST arrive by Thursday, February 16, 6:00 p.m. for the Volunteer Orientation. Fuego y Agua Volunteers will receive Race T-Shirt, Pizza Dinner, Race Dinner, Post-Race Banquet and all food on race day (this does not include food for Calzado 5k race day).

Thursday Feb 16th, 2012
Isla Limpia | Breakfast (Thursday, February 16, 8:30 a.m.)
  • meet for breakfast before trash pickup
Isla Limpia | Trash Pickup begins (Thursday, February 16, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.)
  • we will pick up garbage until we fill the trucks
Isla Limpia | Lunch (Thursday, February 16, 1:00 p.m.)
  • meet for post pickup lunch and watermelon
FULL TIME | Volunteer Orientation Pizza Dinner (Thursday, February 16, 6:00 p.m.)
  • Race Headquarters, Moyogalpa
  • all teams and tasks will be assigned, maps will be handed out etc.
Friday Feb 17th, 2012
FULL TIME | Packet-pickup (Friday, February 17, 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • hand runners their packets, provide tourism information etc.
FULL TIME | Course Marking - Hike/Run (Friday, February 17, 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • must be able to hike rough terrain for long periods of time
FULL TIME | Course Marking - Motorcycle (Friday, February 17, 5:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • must be familiar with island and with riding motorcycles on extremely rough terrain
FULL TIME | Aid Stations (Saturday, Feburary 18, 3:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.)
  • work at one of six Aid Stations. give runners food and water, take down numbers and times
Saturday Feb 18th, 2012
FULL TIME | Volcano Aid Stations (Saturday, February 18, 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. the following day)
  • work at one of two Aid Stations. give runners food and water, take down numbers and times *Involves heavy carrying, extensive hiking and drastic weather conditions.
FULL TIME | Motorcycle Course Control (Saturday, February 18, 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. the following day)
  • must be familiar with island and with riding motorcycles on extremely rough terrain
Sunday Feb 19th, 2012

*Volunteer sign up sheets for the Calzado 5k will be available at the Volunteer Orientation and the Race Dinner.

Calzado 5k | Finish Line (Sunday, February 19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
  • set finish line in Moyogalpa with tents, water, snacks, finish line tape, awards etc.)
  • help children into truck for transport to start line
  • keep track of 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers in all categories
  • tear-down tents and clean area
Calzado 5k | Start Line (Sunday, February 19, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
  • set start line in Esquipula, organize children in their proper start locations
  • fit children with their shoes
  • go to Aid Station or finish line to help.
Calzado 5k | Aid Stations (Sunday, February 19, 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.)
  • pick an Aid Station, Ultra (1.5km), Nica (3km), Cancha (4km).
  • set up Aid Station
  • provide children with snacks and water
  • tear-down Aid Station
Monday Feb 20th, 2012
FULL TIME | Course Tear-down (Monday, February 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
  • mostly on motorcycle, tear-down flagging and remove signs
FULL TIME | Course Cleanup (Monday, February 20, 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.)
  • cleanup remaining garbage, clean office, pack supplies

Volunteer Registration


Because our goal is for runners to rest and get ready for the race, we will not assign them full time volunteering tasks. If you are interested in being a runner-volunteer before or after the event, we can use your help with Isla Limpia and Calzado 5k.
